Second-Hand Furniture and Bed Bugs: What Every UK Home Needs to Know

Second-hand furniture has never been more popular in the UK. With the cost of living squeezing household budgets and the environmental case for buying second-hand stronger than ever, millions of sofas, mattresses, bed frames, and wardrobes are changing hands every year through Facebook Marketplace, eBay, charity shops, and house clearance auctions.

Unfortunately, this trend has a downside: second-hand upholstered furniture is one of the most common routes by which bed bugs enter UK homes. Pest controllers across the country report that a significant proportion of new infestations can be traced back to a recently purchased second-hand item.

Why Second-Hand Furniture Carries High Risk

Bed bugs are expert hiders. They can live inside mattress seams, within sofa cushion padding, along the joints of wooden bed frames, and inside drawer runners — all completely invisible to the casual eye. When someone sells an infested piece of furniture, they may not even know the infestation exists.

Sellers on online marketplaces often don’t disclose bed bug problems, either because they haven’t noticed them, or because they know the item won’t sell if they do. This makes buying upholstered second-hand items inherently risky, particularly for:

  • Mattresses and divan bases
  • Sofas, armchairs, and sofa beds
  • Bed frames (especially upholstered or with hollow sections)
  • Wardrobes and chest of drawers
  • Headboards

How to Inspect Second-Hand Furniture Before Bringing It Inside

The golden rule is: inspect outside before you bring anything through your front door. Once an infested item is inside your home, you’ve introduced bugs into your living space. Inspect items in the seller’s driveway, in your van or trailer before unloading, or at the very least in your garage or porch.

What to Look For

Use a bright torch and look closely at:

  • Mattress seams and piping — run your finger along the seam and examine the fabric closely for dark spots, shed skins, or eggs
  • Sofa cushion zips and seams — unzip removable covers if possible and inspect the inner foam
  • Wooden joints and screw holes — bed bugs hide in any gap or recess in wooden furniture
  • Drawer runners — pull drawers out fully and check the runners and the space behind
  • Tufting and button indentations — common hiding spots on upholstered items

Signs of Bed Bugs to Look For

  • Small reddish-brown insects (similar in size and colour to an apple seed)
  • Tiny white or pale yellow eggs (about 1mm long, often in clusters)
  • Dark brown or black dots (excrement)
  • Rusty brown smears (blood spots)
  • Pale yellow shed skins (nymphs moult as they grow)

What to Do If You’re Not Sure

If you’ve already brought an item inside and you’re now worried it might be harbouring bed bugs, here’s what to do:

  1. Don’t move the item to another room — this risks spreading any infestation
  2. Bag up any removable covers or soft furnishings and wash at 60°C
  3. Inspect the item carefully using a torch in good light
  4. If you find signs of bugs, call a professional immediately — don’t attempt to treat a potentially infested piece of furniture with shop-bought sprays

Should You Avoid Buying Second-Hand Furniture Altogether?

Not necessarily — but it pays to be selective. Hard furniture (wooden tables, metal shelving, flat-pack items) carries very low risk. The risk rises significantly with upholstered items, particularly mattresses and sofas. If you’re buying a second-hand mattress, the honest answer from a pest control perspective is: the risk is rarely worth it.

If you do buy second-hand upholstered furniture, inspect it thoroughly before it enters your home, and consider treating it with a bed bug mattress encasement cover if it’s a mattress or divan.
