Waking up with unexplained bites can be alarming, and two of the most common culprits are bed bugs and fleas. Both are small, both feed on human blood, and both can cause itchy red welts on the skin. But the bites differ in several important ways, and identifying which pest you’re dealing with is the first step to solving the problem.
The Key Differences at a Glance
| Feature | Bed Bug Bites | Flea Bites |
|---|---|---|
| Location on body | Upper body — arms, neck, face, shoulders | Lower body — ankles, feet, lower legs |
| Pattern | Lines or clusters of 3+ | Random, scattered |
| When bitten | During sleep (usually overnight) | Any time, especially near pets or carpets |
| Appearance | Flat or raised red welts, sometimes with dark centre | Small red dot with halo, often with white centre |
| Itching | Delayed — may appear hours after bite | Immediate and intense |
| Pets affected? | No — bed bugs prefer humans | Yes — cats and dogs also scratching |
Bed Bug Bites in Detail
Bed bugs feed exclusively on blood, and in a domestic setting, they strongly prefer humans. They feed at night while you sleep, injecting a mild anaesthetic so you don’t feel the bite. The reaction develops later — typically a few hours after the bite — as your immune system responds to proteins in the bed bug’s saliva.
Classic features of bed bug bites:
- Small, red, raised welts often in a straight line or curved cluster (sometimes called “breakfast, lunch and dinner”)
- Located on skin that’s exposed during sleep — arms, neck, shoulders, face, and hands
- Reaction can range from mild redness to intensely itchy, swollen welts depending on the individual
- Around 30% of people show no visible reaction at all
Flea Bites in Detail
Fleas are more indiscriminate feeders. If you have a cat or dog, fleas will primarily target your pets but will also bite humans. Even if you don’t have pets, fleas can enter a property in clothing or if you’ve moved into a property previously occupied by pet owners.
Classic features of flea bites:
- Small red spots, often with a lighter ring or “halo” around them
- Clustered around ankles and lower legs — fleas live in carpets and jump upward to feed
- Itching is immediate and intense
- Your pets will also be scratching and grooming excessively
How to Confirm Which Pest You Have
Looking at your bites alone isn’t always enough. To confirm the pest, look for physical evidence:
Signs of Bed Bugs
- Small reddish-brown insects (apple-seed sized) on your mattress seams, headboard, or bedside furniture
- Dark brown spots (excrement) on mattress seams or bed frame
- Tiny bloodstains on your bedding
- Pale shed skins in mattress seams or bed frame joints
Signs of Fleas
- Tiny black or dark brown insects jumping on carpets, pet bedding, or furniture
- “Flea dirt” — tiny black specks (flea excrement) on pet fur or bedding that turn red-brown when wet
- Pets scratching more than usual and grooming excessively
- Visible bite marks primarily on pets
Quick test for flea dirt: Put some of the black specks on a damp white tissue. If they dissolve into a red-brown colour, it’s flea excrement (dried blood). This confirms fleas.
Can You Have Both at the Same Time?
Yes — it’s possible, though uncommon. If you have pets and have recently brought in second-hand furniture, it’s worth checking for both. Flea treatment and bed bug treatment are completely different processes, so correctly identifying the pest matters.
What to Do Next
If it’s fleas: Treat your pets with a vet-recommended flea treatment, wash all pet bedding at 60°C, and treat your carpets and soft furnishings with a household flea spray. A follow-up insecticide treatment of floors and upholstery is usually required.
If it’s bed bugs: Contact a professional pest controller immediately. Bed bug infestations do not resolve on their own and grow quickly. Shop-bought sprays are largely ineffective against resistant UK populations. Professional heat treatment is the most reliable solution, completing eradication in a single visit.
